Well, it's a job

I'm getting awfully tired of being on call 24/7. It should go away, or at least party away, when we get the new system implemented late in 2008. I know I'm whining, but wouldn't you be a bit fussy if you had a call from work at 3:30 a.m? It's not even a show-stopper. I'll go in around 10 and figure out what piece of ancient equipment decided to spasm, and fix it as well as I can.

On another note, we just finished up a delightful visit with Debb and Phil. They didn't complain about the cold and rain, and managed to be civil to my cousin's husband when we went out to a chaotic family dinner.

I won't make it up to Seattle for any more events until Dahlface walks for her Master's Degree in June. I don't expect good weather, but I can hope ... And Mark will be with me. He gets to have a couple of screws removed from his leg. It should be simple, but nothing about this injury or the surgery has been simple or straightforward. Perhaps it's time for that karma to change.

I'm selling the VFR. The bike is truly lovely and a great companion, but I don't have the time for long distance riding these days. Karolyn suggested the Kawasaki 650R. It seems to fit well, I'm interesting in the parallel twin, and the color is beautiful. I *refuse* to even think about a test ride before I sell Chiquita, however. That said, I really do need to announce that she's for sale. Sigh, something *else* to deal with (whining again). I do have incentive. Once I get something I enjoy riding again, I can take a ride with Sachi and the other Women in the Wind here in the San Diego area.

I feel your pain; I'm the 24x365 support person.

This past year I got a phone call at about 0430... Christmas eve morning.

Customer's server had a dying disk, the RAID controller couldn't figure out which disk was really bad, so it (thankfully) did the smart thing- downgraded both and crashed the box.

I drug my carcass out of bed, yanked a disk from my personal dev server, drove down to the customer site (Salem, about 35 miles), figured out which disk had died, swapped mine in, and was home by 0800.

Oh HELL yes, we're milking that incident as marketing to potential customers.

At least it was, in fact, a show-stopper. I also get a lot of calls from customers for dead PCs, monitors, printers... all the on-site stuff that we don't support. They know it's not my area, but they call me first because I'll answer the phone, and, if necessary, hunt down their IT person for them.

Because, like 911 centers, jails never close.
