Forum Idea

First I'd like to thank Carl and anyone else responsible for this forum.

How about we have a weekly photo shoot.  Pick a topic/subject/idea for each week and then take appropriate photos.  Post on Mondays and discuss what you had in mind, how you did it etc.  Example - kitchens (I'm doing a kitchen tile job at the moment :-)).  Most people have access to a kitchen.  You could use various lightening techniques (natural, artificial), people cooking (slow shutter speeds showing stir fry, pan cake flipping etc.) etc. etc.  How about traffic.... night shots with streaming lights, shots from your office down onto the street, closeups of pedestrians dodging cars etc etc.  The point being you get out and shoot photos every week and then discuss how you did it.  Everyone gets to participate and learn from others.

Sounds like work

Interesting idea. I would love to read and view what people do with it. However, unfortunately, I don't expect I'd often participate. I'm too "busy" (or too lazy) most of the time.

Work?

Nice looking kitchen. Take a picture of Rhonda cooking something. I haven't seen a photo of her in a while. Here's another idea for a weekly photo... everyone take a photo of themselves and their significant others, kids etc. in the kitchen doing something. --Terry

Rhonda exposed!

I'll try and get a photo of her cooking supper tonight. The kitchen looks somewhat different now, as those photos were taken after the remodel in 1998.

I'm in

Although my kitchen sucks.

For now, here's a pic I took a few months ago of my step-mother in her kitchen.

Hi Keith, Try the Levels or

Hi Keith, Try the Levels or shadow/highlight function to lighten the midtones a bit. I'm positive non PS programs also have this function. http://www.tkpowell.com/wetphoto/keith.htm --Terry

Although my original image

Although my original image is a tad dark, this is one of those cases where I actually prefer the image this way, as opposed to your lightened version. I think it's mainly because the original image is closer to how I remember the scene (only fading evening sunlight coming in through the windows).

Photo of the week challenge?

When I was in school we had an instructor who would create a 'challenge' project. He'd define the terms of the 'shoot' and then we'd go do it.

The terms would usually include three variables - for instance:

Outdoors

Motion

Book

All three elements would have to be in each image submitted.

Somewhat like the illustrious 'Cookoff' only with pictures.

Variation - one subject, multiple backgrounds.

Something like that'd be fun and challenge all levels who'd care to participate.

Sounds like a fun challenge

Sounds like a fun challenge to me!  The big trick will be to get all of us in the kitchen long enough for a picture.  Little girls don't slow down very often!

My week's homework: Kitchen

So I have two photos for this. You decide the favorite:

When Assassin Commuters (tm) go bad?

I love it! My favorite is obvious. On to the critique! The OW! picture - Great use of color, composition and subject. Looks like your model may have fought a bit...I like the use of humor. Exposure and color balance are good. Focus is good and the subject is obvious. Very nice. The framing of the kitchen sink shot is nice. Exposure and color balance are good. I like the subtle reflection in the window. I'm not so sure about the amount of 'stuff' behind the sink, nor am I sure about the soap bottle. I think there's an element of distraction happening.

kitchen sink

Yeah, that one was supposed to be what all is happening in our kitchen at any given time. The thumb just happened to occur right when I was taking the sink photo, and turned out to be the better of the two. Story of my life! :)

Sorry for the delay.

Where's the beef?

Oh yeah, that's a great shot with the dogs. --Terry

1 dog better

Thanks - but I think it it's much better now, with some adjustment and cropped tightly. Chewy really likes celery. Sadly, one dog was omitted in that process.
