WetLeather Motorcycle Rider Information

I finally got around to re-loading Photoshop 5.5 on my PC (haven't needed it since I rebuilt the drive) and have a question on Adobe Gamma.  I'm using a Viewsonic 902 flat panel monitor now (prior monitor used a Trinitron 19" tube) and when I run the Gamma wizard the results are really ugly.  I cannot get anywhere near the settings needed to make the handy visual setup indicators (gray box inside a black box inside a white frame, box inside a field of lines, etc.) look the way I think they're supposed to look.  Anyone familiar with this tool have any suggestions?
