Is there a concensus on the pluses and minuses of one over the other?
My Canon EOS 30D is capable of shooting either or both. The downside is, when I shoot both JPEG and RAW simultaneously, the interval between sequential shots grows to the point where it makes it very difficult to do rapid fire shooting.
How about in editing?
What say ye?

I shoot raw exlusively. Not because I make a lot changes during the conversion process but when it's necessary, it's really the way to go. I did a google on 'why shoot raw' and there are some pretty good links on why it is a good idea. And if at some point down the road you decide to really get into massaging your photos (pre photoshop), then you have the original 'unmolested' version to start with.
