I recently bought a couple of new (to me) ca. 1973 Yashica Electro 35 GSN rangefinder cameras. These are renowned for their beautiful lenses but also some metering problems when parts wear out. The Yashica GSN looks like this:
I got both of them very cheaply in "as-is" condition off ebay, so I was expected problems, and I found them. I ran a test roll through the first one and found that it meters poorly in low-light conditions. To wit:
Test shot or not, I hate to just throw away a photo like this. So I decided to see what I could do with Photoshop. The end result:
The biggest challenge with this photo was improving the color and appearance of the cat, without making the background too bright. To resolve this problem I used a Photoshop Layer Mask. Click here for my step-by-step process.
