Scanning B&W

I am looking for a little advice on scanning some T-Max 3600.  I tried my first set of 6 last night using VueScan.  I scanned them at 5400dpi and as B/W and saved them as TIF.  I have only got to view the results so far but was expecting a little better.  I have yet to open them with Photoshop but am wondering if I would have been better off scanning them as color negatives to getter a better tonal range.

I would definitely recommend

I would definitely recommend scanning them as color, but make sure that Vuescan doesn't do any auto-correction of the colors. I don't know about Vuescan, but I know if I choose B/W in my scanner software it only scans as 8-bit grayscale.

Vuescan goes all the way to 64bit RGBi even in B&W

But I may try a strip in color.  That is a good idea.  The scanning actually went okay but more grain than I expected and than what I see in the negative.  Doesn't help that my fancy photo printer can't print B&W.
