My portfolio

So, I have been taking this photography class.

I have to submit a minimum of 25 photos in very specific categories.

1 each that signify

  • Peak Action/Decisive Moment
  • Exaggerated Motio via shutter speed
  • Extensive depth of field
  • selective focus
  • maximum texture in still life or portrait
  • high contrast in terms of subject brightness range
  • low contrast in terms of subject brightness range
  • warm color palette
  • cool color palette
  • mixed color palette
  • visual concept or impression of a number
  • light as your subject
  • shadow as your subject
  • "tempus fugit"
  • self portrait

Then at least 10 more that fit either or both the following categories

  • Only in Cairo/Egypt
  • Auto Deco.

Here is my portfolio

They are significantly reduced in size and quality for the web,

I have to bring it in tomorrow morning for a critique with the prof, make any changes he suggests and print em.

I have to admit I cheated a bit, many of these photos I already had.

Still had to go out and stage some. Including taking about a hundred self portraits. I really dont like the way I look. Ended up with a cliched shot.

Anyway, wish me luck.

Most Excellent Photos

Sounds like a really cool class.  Let us know how you did Jack.

Terry

wow!

Jack, those photos are fantastic.

Michael

Those are really nice

Shots like those I don't think you need luck.  I would expect you to do  well.

Review went well

Thanks for the kind words to everyone.

The review went well.

Note: this was the final review before submitting my portfolio.

The photos are graded on 3 scales

Technical merit: Ya know, in focus, well exposed etc

Artistic merit: Is it interesting, etc

Does it convey the message:

Each photo is supposed to fit a theme. Does it fit that theme.

The professors reactions typically include

"That's an A photo"

"Good, it works"

"hmm. ok it fulfills the criteria." (ie: a ho-hum photo )

"it fulfills part of the criteria, but lacks otherwise"

This is typically, in this class anyway, when the photemetes the theme, but is otherwise uninteresting or uninspired.

and finally

"uh, i don't see it."

Which means burn this photo.

I got a couple of "A photos". several "good it works"

I only got a couple of "ok it fulfills the criteria"

and I got one that he liked techincally and artistically, but he didn't think was right for the them. That was the "shadow" photo of the palm tree on the wall of the Temple at Karnak.

He thought there was too much detial in the shadow and that the shadow edges were too soft.

He wants more "dark" and the photo to be more about shadow.

I dunno what I am gonna do about that one.

But the interesting thing to me was that the photos I thought were the best, he did not think were the best.

And one or two that I included that I though were weak, but I needed something for the cateogry, he really liked.

I can't figure him out. :-)

Oh well, thanks for listening
