Today is the beginning of the second week of my liquid diet. I began taking only liquids the day before surgery. Sometime in the last few days it really started to hit me. Its very odd to go this long on only drinks and soups. Very odd indeed.
I am still drinking and eating soup a bit faster than I should. I think that I am going to struggle with the pacing part of the new regimen. A lifetime of eating too fast is a hard habit to break. When they eventually tighten up my band the consequences of eating too fast will be quite unpleasant and perhaps the issue will solve itself. I'll have to see.
The consequence of eating yogurt (thank god for Nancy's), soup (mostly tomato), protein powder, soy milk, and clear protein drinks is a gassy and somewhat uncomfortable intestinal system. I am hoping that introducing pureed foods next week will help quiet things down.
I got a reminder of why I don't consume plain milk anymore. I thought I would try some shelf stable natural soups with milk in order to boost the protein content of the servings. Bad idea. I'm still recovering from the even worse gas and diarrhea that resulted. Bleech!
The good news is that I have lost some weight. The scale in my bathroom said "286.5" last night. When I went in to the LABS research (in the new OHSU building on the south waterfront) offices a few weeks ago they weighed me as 303. My pre-op weight in Legacy was 295.5. The trend is good. I topped out at 325 before all this began. Very bad from a motorcycle suspension standpoint.
As an aside I just picked up copies of "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and "In Defense of Food" at Annie Blooms yesterday. I am looking forward to reading them.
