Sports

See if this works.  It's been so quiet here.  I have been taking a lot of basketball shots.  Mostly High School but here was just at the UO v California women's game.  Hampton was last years Pac-10 player of the year.

My D50 is only capable of 1600 ISO so "gifted" myself the 50mm F1.4 for Christmas.  Does quite well.  Would like the 85mm F1.4 but that's twice the price of my camera.  Then I saw my friends D300.  Want bad.  Figuring out product times I think the D400 will come out just about my birthday 2009.  I am starting to save now.

Oh, a little more.  Most HS are crappily lit.  Shutter priority set to 1/200 gives me F1.8 to F2.  At Mac was getting F2.5.  Grain is acceptable.  Have printed some 8x10s of the HS stuff and was fine.

Great

That blank at the top of my post contained the pictures.  Try this link.

Those are some good images

Those are some good images Bob. I don't do much sports photography because I really don't have the equipment for it right now (mostly wide angle stuff).

There are LOTS of Nikon lenses on ebay. You may want to look for a fast, fixed-length manual focus tele lens. That may help you get closer to the action while dealing with the low light of HS gyms.

More lenses

Good idea but I suck at manual focus.  A new 85mm F1.4 is $1k.  There is a 85mm F1.4 AIS on eBay for $500.  It is interesting but I think I am doing okay with my 50mm F1.4 for now and am saving up for a D400 which would allow me to use all my other F2.8 glass.

And I should add

that with the DX sensor a 85mm has the frame size of almost a 130mm.  Getting just a little bit too long.

great composition

I like the tension in the first picture. It's like she's crouched preparing to pounce on her prey. I also like the scoreboard and the wee hint of net. Very compelling work(s).

Me likey.
