Scanning B&W

I am looking for a little advice on scanning some T-Max 3600.  I tried my first set of 6 last night using VueScan.  I scanned them at 5400dpi and as B/W and saved them as TIF.  I have only got to view the results so far but was expecting a little better.  I have yet to open them with Photoshop but am wondering if I would have been better off scanning them as color negatives to getter a better tonal range.

Selective Editing with Layer Masks

I recently bought a couple of new (to me) ca. 1973 Yashica Electro 35 GSN rangefinder cameras. These are renowned for their beautiful lenses but also some metering problems when parts wear out. The Yashica GSN looks like this:

I got both of them very cheaply in "as-is" condition off ebay, so I was expected problems, and I found them. I ran a test roll through the first one and found that it meters poorly in low-light conditions. To wit:

Make your own photo book

Here is a really cool idea.  You can make your own photo book or collaborate with others and tell people where to buy it.  Not incredibly expensive either.

Adobe Gamma

I finally got around to re-loading Photoshop 5.5 on my PC (haven't needed it since I rebuilt the drive) and have a question on Adobe Gamma.  I'm using a Viewsonic 902 flat panel monitor now (prior monitor used a Trinitron 19" tube) and when I run the Gamma wizard the results are really ugly.  I cannot get anywhere near the settings needed to make the handy visual setup indicators (gray box inside a black box inside a white frame, box inside a field of lines, etc.) look the way I think they're supposed to look.  Anyone familiar with this tool have any suggestions?

Digitizing film - what product or service do/did you use

I have a bunch of my older stuff stored away in slide reels.  All of these are mounted in cardboard slide mounts.  What kind of product or service have you folks used to get these into the digital world?  I'd like to digitize them for safekeeping and sharing with other folks (like this forum).  My flatbed scanner (Epson Perfection 1260 Photo) has a slide illumination attachment, but I suspect the scan quality won't be as good as some other techniques or a dedicated slide scanner of some type.

Photo hosting sites

Up to now I've always just dropped photos onto my web site or emailed them to interested parties.  But that doesn't give me an easily managed way to put up collections of shots or have a nice gallery display - I have to hard-code it all myself.  I've noticed that a lot of WL folks are using Picasa to host their work.  What are some good sites for hosting photos?
